may - herbal aloe salve
May 1st starts our lake season in Tahoe; boats are starting to appear out on the lake, and the layers of clothes have slowly peeled off to allow the sun to shine upon our skin again.
Each year I vow to “treat my skin better”, and each year I struggle to keep my eczema under control. Moisture is my friend, and I have a bitter-sweet relationship with the sun; one thing that offers immediate benefits is ALOE VERA. I grow a plant inside, and harvest one leaf at time (to gut), and keep in my fridge to lavish on my skin when needed.
What does aloe CONTAIN:
- Anti-bacterial properties
- Fatty Acids, Salicylic Acid
- Vitamins A, C, B & E, folic acid & choline
- Minerals: zinc, magnesium, chromium, potassium
What can aloe DO:
- Laxative (anthraquinones)
- Reduce inflammation (bradykinase enzyme)
- Make-up remover
- Shaving gel
- Soothing (aloe ice cubes) for burns
- Heal minor wounds
- Facial wash
- Clears bad breath
- Calms acid indigestion
- Eyebrow gel
- Moisturizer
With all this newfound knowledge, I bet you can’t wait to get your hands on a fresh aloe leaf?!! Well, happy to say, I am going to incorporate this wonderful plant into May’s “Around the Sun with Herbalism” workshop; we will be creating a super moisturizing/soothing salve for our skin. And if you have never sliced open an aloe plant, you are in for a treat… there are a couple tricks one must follow, but it is a super easy process otherwise.
We will then mix the aloe you cut into my proprietary blend of shea butter, beeswax & coconut oil (infused with calendula & chamomile), and then add whatever essential oil combination you desire to create your personal salve to protect your beautiful skin this summer.
I expect classes to fill up quick this month, so as usual… please reserve your seat at the table.
