april… herbal bug spray
This month’s herbal product was an easy pick, as it has become all too obvious that spring has arrived; which means the bugs are not far off. So we will create an herbal bug spray out of witch hazel, water & a bunch of essential oils.
Most of my classes involve a lot of choices from a wide array of herbs, tinctures and essential oils, but this class will be more about getting a reliable bug spray than it will be about intention and energetics.
I have tested my products in Mexico and I have tested them in our own Paige Meadows, and this product works. The best part is that it lacks any of the hostel chemicals found in other store-bought brands, and here’s why we don’t like them according to SafeMade:
Deet (among a handful of others) is in a family of pyrethroids that are lipophilic, which means they love fat cells. They can easily cross the blood-brain-barrier and become toxic to the central nervous system; the WHO has said that synthetic pyrethroids are neuropoisons. Acute reactions to pyrethroids include dermatitis and asthma-like reactions, nausea, incoordination, and burning and itching sensations. The most severe poisoning cases have been reported in infants, because their systems can’t efficiently break down pyrethroids. Many pyrethroids have been linked to endocrine disruption and some have been classified as possible carcinogens.
We can do better than spraying pesticides on the ones we love, and April’s class will show you just how easy it is to make a bug repellent that is safe for kids, dogs and your precious skin. We start with an equal portion of witch hazel and clean water; then the fun of adding essential oils begins; we use over 50 drops of essential oils, blended by design to fend off little flying & crawling critters.
